Drain/Moth Fly

Identification:  Adults are about 1/16 to 1/4” long, delicate and fuzzy.  They tend to be brownish-gray to black in color.  While stagnant, they have an appearance of an upside-down heart.

Habits:  Drain/Moth flies breed in decaying organic materials.  They are usually found in wet matter such as around drains, restrooms, mop closets, and bar areas.  Since they are weak fliers, they are often seen crawling on walls.  During the day, they typically rest on a vertical surface near their breeding sites.

Control:  Sanitation is the best method of control for the drain/moth fly.  Finding and eliminating their breeding sites is the best course of action.
