Mosquitos undergo complete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult). Understanding their lifecycle, especially egg laying sites, in NW Indiana is essential to the reduction of populations. Female mosquitos lay eggs in either floodwater areas or an area with a stagnant water source. Floodwater areas are described as low-lying areas that will eventually collect and hold water. Stagnant water sources can range from buckets to slow moving rivers.
Homeowners can contribute to the reduction of mosquito populations through general upkeep on a property. Areas of consideration include:
- Filling low spots in yard or holes in trees until cavity is filled
- Items such as bird baths, kiddie pools, etc. should be emptied on a weekly basis
- Cleaning gutters-blockages that contain water and debris are major hotspots for mosquito egg laying
- Reduction of clutter-items such as old tires, tin cans or like materials that have the possibility of holding water
- Flipping over non frequently used items to reduce water retention (dog bowls, kiddie pools)
Even if all these considerations are put into action, it will not result in a total elimination, but rather a natural way to reduce the population. Other factors such as neglect of neighboring properties, mosquito flight habits and environmental factors all contribute to the success of a mosquito population.
